Reynosa Mexico - Plastic Recycling and Water Cleanup

Country or Countries Where Challenge Takes Place:

Many Reynosa residents lack clean water and safe, durable living conditions.  In abundance, there is plastic and water filled with chemicals.  Therefore, the challenge is to identify water purification technologies, and plastic recycling technologies which can turn the plastic into building materials.  Some technologies may be compatible and accomplish both at the same time.

Commodity:
Plastics, water filled with heavy metals and chemicals, sand, dirt, minimal scrub, large multinational corporations continuing to produce plastics (constant stream).
Custom & Culture:
Reynosa is on the Mexico and United States border. Due to the location, it is one of the largest border crossing points on the entire US/Mexico border. This creates commerce, but also conflict. There has been a recent increase in drug cartel violence. Also, flooding has been problematic in many areas. Water must be imported because groundwater is poisoned, there is a need for adequate shelter.
Knowledge:
Value is currently unknown.
Money:
Value is currently unknown.
Technology:
Value is currently unknown. There is a local labor technology training as many work at large multinational factories.
Well-Being:
Residents in Reynosa have strong community. Basic living standards need to be improved. Water is poisoned and needs to be imported. Food, clothing and shelter do not meet basic needs. Crime and violence are high. Good groups and individuals are working on these issues. The situation has improved - a few months ago, the situation was extremely dangerous.
